A creative exciting display solution can exist for almost anything. Treasured items or newly acquired possessions/artworks/ephemera can, if appropriately handled, create unique decorative items which will excite ongoing interest. The solution may not even be framing but could be treasure boxes or soft wall hangings.
The major consideration should always be to provide the safest long-term mounting and display. Choose if at all possible, safe and REVERSIBLE mounting techniques.
Dust will accumulate if glass is not used, therefore some items should always be behind glass. If it is necessary for the item to be removed from the frame and occasionally handled or worn a different approach needs to be considered.
If the item is very large it is very important hanging and opening systems are reliable, easy to operate and SAFE.
Antique items of sentimental or monetary value need to be considered carefully. Oil paintings, watercolours, textiles or prints framed in their time with the materials available often show serious deterioration. Often the services of a conservator are required to assess the item and recommend strategies. If the conservation treatment is accepted, conservation framing is then appropriate eg. conservation glass, ragmat, appropriate mounting technique.
Often in the artistic process the artwork grows and grows as inspiration takes over. The sheer size then becomes an issue when choosing framing solutions.
If you have an artwork on paper the most common problem is the size of the available matboard. If the artwork is over 1000mm x 1500mm or 1000mm x 1000mm square it is difficult to use a mat border effectively.
There are a number of alternatives to consider however planning of the artwork is useful in the early stages.
We accept that artists find professional framing for their exhibitions often above their budget. However genuine artists should always consider appropriate archival framing to advertise and assure their clients that deterioration of the artworks will not occur.
Frames + Finishes regularly sees deteriorating artworks in which the materials used in the framing have been the culprit.
The most unacceptable is the packaging or double-sided tape used for hanging. MDF or strawboard backing boards are also a long-term problem.
